Nutrition Can Improve Mental Health Better Than Prescription Medication

Julia Rucklidge – clinical psychologist – delivers the TED talk on the importance of nutrition and its key role in mental health. She reminds us to a time when doctors have radical reaction to patients to the reaction they have now, about the idea that nutrition is better than medicaments when they treat people with mental illnesses like : depression, schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder an ADHD. Dr. Julia advises that today there are lots of medication on the market, but mental illnesses continues to rise.

Medical doctors form all around the world admit that they haven’t learned much about nutrition in school. Dr. Rucklidge believes that nutrition could benefit patients when it came to treat mental illnesses. She has been conducting a study over the past years and found that ‘’ nutrition is a safe way to treat, avoid and lessen mental illness’’. In one of her studies, adult participants were taking minerals and vitamins (micro-nutrients) to treat ADHD. Results were visible in just 8 weeks. Those people who continued with the micro-nutrient continued to see positive results, compared to the others who were back to medications. According to her findings, medications are effective only on a short term basis, on long term basis medications can be ineffective or even detrimental.

Micro-nutrients are also tasted on patients suffering from schizophrenia, depression, bi-polar disorder. Results were remarkable on a long term basis. Micro-nutrients are effective and less expensive than medications.
Nutrition plays a critical role for our mental health so we need to get serious about that.
