Mothers Who Suffer From Pregnancy Sickness Are More Likely to Have Children with Higher IQ

Healthy pregnancy is one of the most important topics for expecting mothers or mothers-to-be. One of the most worrying things about pregnancy is the morning sickness and the fact that due to it, the baby may not get all the nutrients and benefits from the food the mother is consuming. It seems that there is nothing to worry about, because a recent study showed that mothers who suffer from morning sickness during pregnancy tend to give birth to a child with a high IQ. This is a comforting fact to think of, in particular when mothers are copying with the morning sickness over the toilet lavatory.

In the last decades, the morning sickness is one of the most frequent symptoms of pregnancy that can occur at any time of the day. The first signs of morning sickness can actually indicate early pregnancy and it can last in the period of the first 14 to 16 weeks of the pregnancy. The morning sickness is also a sign that the hormones are working properly and are at the required level to endure the pregnancy. Still, it cannot be explained why some mothers do not experience morning sickness at all.

The scientists from Canada did a study and found that there is a relation between the pregnancy sickness and the decreased levels of spontaneous abortions and further pregnancy related complications. They also examined the effects of morning sickness to the brain reactions of the babies such as development of behavior, memory, attention and intelligence.

The study was conducted of total 121 Canadian mothers, of which 92 experienced vomiting and nausea during pregnancy, while 29 did not have any of those symptoms.

The study’s findings were the following: the children whose mothers experienced morning sickness were better in a manner that the morning sickness had better effects to the further development of these children. Namely, the IQ of all children, whose mothers participated in this study, was measured and the children whose mothers had morning sickness during the pregnancy had higher IQ than the children whose mothers did not have morning sickness at all. The children with higher IQ had better results in testing their language skills and memory.

Still, it should not be taken for granted that if you are expecting mother and you do not have morning sickness, you will give birth to a less intelligent child. All children that were part of this study had a normal range of intelligence.

Discussing the benefits of morning sickness, it is also very important to mention the hyperemesis gravidarum or severe morning sickness. This condition can be very dangerous for the mother and the baby. It is manifested with constant vomiting that does not become better even after taking the prescribed medication, severe fatigue, dehydration and muscle weakness. This type of morning pregnancy can impact in that way, so the baby may not get all the nutrients and benefits from the food the mother is consuming. In case you are an expecting mother and you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, you are strongly advised to immediately visit your doctor.
