How to Make Coconut Oil Hair Shampoo Bars?

Most of the traditional hair shampoos contain a toxic compound, known as sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate (SLS/SLES), which can be responsible for causing skin and eye irritation, as well as organ toxicity and cancer. Instead of using these shampoos, you should try making your own hair shampoo bars. In case you haven’t heard of it, a shampoo bar is a solid bar, similar to a soap bar, made for your hair. By substituting the traditional shampoo with this shampoo bar you will immensely improve the quality of your hair. The shampoo bars, unlike the commercial shampoos, are made of natural ingredients and, they are extremely cheap since one bar lasts for months. Here is how to make coconut oil shampoo bars.

Preparation of Coconut Oil Shampoo Bars

The ingredients required for making coconut oil shampoo bars are:

  • 33 oz. coconut oil

  • 5.44 oz. lye (for dry hair you should use 5.32 oz. lye)

  • 12.54 oz. water

  • 1-ounce essential oil of your choice (optional)

Before starting to make the shampoo bars, make sure you have digital scale, crock pot, thermometer, stick blender, small glass bowls, glass measuring cups, bowl with vinegar and water for cleaning if something comes in contact with the lye, stainless steel or plastic spoon with long handle, soap mold and parchment paper for lining it, and protective equipment, including plastic or rubber gloves, long sleeve shirt, and safety glasses.

In order to make the coconut oil shampoo bars, first, you should measure all of the ingredients. Turn the crock pot onto low and add the coconut oil to it. Next, you should add the lye, along with a medium-sized glass of water, into a bowl. Gently mix them with a long-handled spoon. While doing so, make sure you are wearing your protective gear. In order to avoid breathing the vapors, you should consider doing this outdoors. After mixing the lye and the water, let the mixture stay for about 10 minutes until it transforms from cloudy to clear. After 10 minutes, bring this mixture inside, and add it to the crock pot with the coconut oil. Optionally, you can add some essential oil. By using a stick blender, blend the mixture for a few minutes until it gets a light pudding texture. Cover the crock pot and cook the mixture on low for 45 minutes to 1 hour.

After the mixture is done, you should place it into your mold. When it will become firm and cool, you should cut it. The coconut oil makes a hard bar so, in order to cut it easily, you shouldn’t leave it too long to dry. You may cut it after about 7 hours. You can use the first bar immediately. Store the remaining bars in a cool and dry place.

The usage of the coconut oil shampoo bar will significantly improve the quality of your hair. Your hair will become smoother, shinier, less frizzy, and more voluminous. After using this shampoo bar, you don’t need to use a hair conditioner, since the bar acts as a natural moisturizer that doesn’t cause any dryness on your scalp and hair. Also, it is effective in boosting the growth of your hair and, in reducing dandruff.
