Cloves in Oranges – a Great DIY Air Freshener

We all hate bad smells in our homes. It’s inevitable to experience it every once in a while, though, due to something rotten, or just frying things like onions and garlic. To fight this, many of us use commercial fragrances that should make our homes smell better. However, they also contain a lot of chemicals which have been known to light up people’s asthma.

The good news is that there are plenty of DIY fragrances that can help. For example, a woman named Kimmi Charlton from Manitoba, Canada, has just shared an unusual combination that helps. She sticks cloves in oranges and claims that it’s the best natural house fragrance you can get. She first saw it on TV around 10 years ago, and after trying it, she was amazed by the smell.

The aromatic effects of this unusual solution were incredible, and she highly recommends it to other people.

Was It Done Before?

Yes, this is actually an age-old “remedy” for bad house smells. These scented balls are known as pomanders and have been used since ancient times. In medieval times, they were worn as jewelry and to ward away bad smells. They might also prevent infections, although studies are needed to confirm those claims.

Pomanders were used in the Middle Ages quite frequently to fight illnesses, bring strength, and possibly even good fortune. They have often been decorated with gems too. In the XVI century, people shaped them in personalized decorations. At the same time, oranges were cut up in smaller pieces and combined with different dry herbs and spices.

They fell out of fashion two centuries later when vinaigrettes became popular. Pomanders are back in fashion now. They are much less expensive than back in the day – you just put a cloves on a cut half of orange and enjoy the smell.

Excellent Holiday Aroma

You can try this great DIY air freshener for the holidays. It’s the perfect time of the year for both cloves and oranges, so why not join them in a pomander? It’s a fantastic DIY solution to bad smells and will make your house smell amazing, even if there are no smells to ward off.

How to Make an Orange Pomander

It’s quite simple, really. You can do it with cut orange halves or simply stick a handful of them in a firm orange. Just like in the picture – it’s very easy to do.

If the orange is too firm and you can’t insert the cloves, you can make tiny holes in it with a toothpick first. You can also roll the oranges in strong herbs or spices such as cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, those kinds of things.

Pomanders can then be hanged on a thread as decoration or ornament. Simply put a wire or a thread through them and hang them up high. Dress them with red ribbons and you have the perfect decoration for the holidays. Merry Christmas and enjoy your new house fragrance.
